“I have been working as a professional artist for more than 30 years and currently use a combination of traditional illustration techniques, photo composite, assemblage skills and digital technology to let my creativity run wild.”

CAROLYN KENRICK

Carolyn Kenrick has been developing her distinct artistic style for over three decades. Born in Sydney and raised in the outback New South Wales town of Broken Hill, Carolyn was immersed in all aspects of art from an early age thanks to her father, an accomplished local artist and professional sign writer.

As her obvious artistic talent began to shine through, Carolyn was invited to formally study with renowned Broken Hill artists such as Clark Barrett, who encouraged her to relocate to Sydney and continue her professional development.

Carolyn went on to study at East Sydney Technical College and undertake a commercial fine-art internship, before embarking on a photographic and painting survey of the UK, France, Sweden and the US.

“This was an opportunity to explore art history and delve into the darkness, mystery and symbolism of both early and modern paintings,” Carolyn explains. “Along the way I painted, illustrated, took innumerable amounts of photos and built a memory bank of images that I continue to draw from.”

Since returning to Australia in 1990, Carolyn has been working from her own studio in Sydney’s inner west, as well as creating decorative painted finishes for commercial clients. She is also regularly commissioned to produce work for a number of private clients.

“I have been exploring the artistic possibilities presented by digital technology for many years now and, in doing so, have found the perfect medium for my often vivid and overactive imagination,” says Carolyn. “I tend to make up stories and layer the various aspects of those stories onto the screen, before transferring them onto a range of fabrications.”

Along with producing 2D photo collages and 3D assemblage art, Carolyn established brainchild ink. in 2014 as a means of converting her images into wearable art. This beautiful collection of silk scarves is a further example of Carolyn’s inimitable style.

CAROLYN’S WORKS ARE ENTIRELY CONVINCING YET MYSTERIOUS. THEY ARE A JUNGIAN AFTER-PARTY FOR INTERPRETATION. WE DON’T KNOW HOW OR WHERE WE ARE BEING LED, BUT THE ARTIST HAS SET UP THE TRAJECTORIES AND NOW IT’S UP TO US TO COMPLETE THE JOURNEY. CAROLYN IS GENTLE IN HER FABRICATION, BUT HER CHOSEN SUBJECTS ARE MULTI-LAYERED WITH MEANING.
